What is a good digestive aid/builder I can get for my horses?I have 2 Mini horses & a mini donkey, all are harder to keep weight on then I feel they should be. I got 1 weeks worth of a digestive aid/immune builder & gave it to my stud who was to thin & was NOT gaining. It helped allot, he got to normal weight but not all my minis lost a little & once again am having a hard time getting it back on.
They are small Minis, 28" & 31" for the horses & 34" for the donkey. Each get 6 cups a day of Nutrina Safe Horse pellets & 4 flakes of hay each a day. It seems like way to much.
What are some supplements I can give or what is the name of a good digestive aid brand?
Thanks so much.

Here's what Smartpak has: http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductCompare.aspx?CATID=10
Though you might consider looking through their other products.
I assume you've already had their teeth checked?
Oh, and have you tried beet pulp? Or adding some alfalfa cubes to their diet. Cubes, though. They're better to digest than pellets.
Add: Oh, Corn Oil as well. It's just kind of magical, and helps all around with everything.

You should feed your horses/donkey by weight of the animal and the feed, not height or cups. Different feeds have different volumes, so all has to weighed according to directions to form a feeding base and then adjust it as needed. If your minis and donkey needs more calories and you like Nutrena feed, topdress your Safe Choice with Empower which is 22% fat. However, my first suggestion would be to adjust what you are feeding by weight as mentioned before beginning with additives and supplements. I do not understand your comment about a "digestive aid" or what you gave/what it contained/ and if you are using is as a weight builder? With a balanced diet, supplements are not necessary and often produce imbalances in the horses. Regarding hay, again by weight (i.e. 1100 pound horse gets minimum 22 pounds of hay per day), but I believe that horses should be given free choice grazing/hay 24/7 to have the best overall health, especially for the gut. Just balance your horses'/donkey's diet and forget about the additives. Unless you have a diagnosed deficiency, I would avoid the supplements. Again, if not needed, they can cause harm. Hope you get it worked out. I have an unbelievable hard keeper so I know what you are facing.
