Well one feature in the intestines is the presence of villus which absorb the end products of digestion. These structures are made of lots of folds exposing a lot more surface area so that it can absorb nutrients and water.
Folding of the small intestine increases surface area by 3.The villi folding increases surface area by 10. And then the presence of microvilli increases the surface area by 20. As a result, the surface area is increased by 600.
