Questions about guinea pigs and rabbits?I'm interested in getting either two guinea pigs or one rabbit. The thing that worries me is their health. I had a guinea pig but sadly 3 weeks ago she died. She had seizures and she had some digestive problems in the past so that was how she died. I'm scared that if I get more guinea pigs they will have to same problems and I will have to go through the same thing as I did before. The same thing goes for rabbits. Are those things common in guinea pigs? What are the health issues rabbits face?
Trust me, i dont think it was something in her diet. everything i fed her was what i was supposed to. i didn't give her anything that she wasn't supposed to have aka ice berg lettuce

I'm currently owning my first two guinea pigs. One I've had since she was three months old, she is now 3 years old, and her daughter I've had since birth is now 2 1/2 years old. My guinea pigs have never had seizures or digestive problems, so maybe you're guinea pig just was unlucky and had medical problems. I don't know anyone else who's owned guinea pigs that have had these symptoms either. If you get another guinea pig, I would look on petfinder.com or at a reputable breeder so that their caretakers can tell you of any possible medical problems.

Usually a digestive problem indicates an improper diet. Many people feed their rodents and rabbits iceberg lettuce, which is often toxic for them, causing stomach upsets, and in rats at least the toxin has caused neurological problems. Or they will feed them too many fresh fruits that contain too much water, which can cause diarrhea. That's not assuming you did or did not, it is simply a common cause for these issues.
The best advice I can give about either one, is to make sure you fully research the animal with a professional breeder to get the most accurate information. Breeders often have more accurate information than veterinarians, since they deal with that particular animal on a daily basis.
Best of luck.

Please check out guinealynx.info for more medical and care advice on gp's. Like any other pet, guinea pigs can have health issues, I wouldn't NOT get one because of what happened to your previous one. Please be aware that on average a gp can live 5-7 years, and they do require veterinary care just like a cat or dog. If you're not willing to spend on possible vet bills, don't get the pet.

A single rabbit usually has very little health problems. just make syre that if you get one to give it a log or roll of paper to chew on(it'll keep their teeth from growing to long and affecting their eating) and to trim their nails when they grow out to long! No matter what I'm sure you'll have better luck with your new guinea pig/rabbit!
