Please explain how peristalsis occurs and how it is involved in the digestive process.?and also....explain the role of the small intestine and large intestine in the digestive process.

peristalsis is the rhythmic contraction iof the smooth muscles of the digestive tract which helps:
1. move the bolus of food along the gastrointestinal tract
2. grind food mechanically
3. mix food with digestive juices

It's a series of coordinated, rhythmic muscle contractions that occur involuntarily and their purpose is to move food through the digestive system.
They begin in the oesophagus and propel food to the stomach from the pharynx after swallowing. It's not gravity that carries food down the oesophagus.
In the stomach and intestine they are slow and move food along gradually to give it time to get digested. They also churn it and mix it thoroughly with digestive juices.
In the large intestine peristaltic movements occur only two or three times per day and move feces towards the rectum to be expelled from the body.
The small intestine carries out a large part of the digestion process and also the absorption of digested nutrients.
The large intestine basically stores the feces until they get expelled. It absorbs water to solidify them and also absorbs some bacteria produced vitamins.
