Painful stomach and digestive problems?I have had painful stomach problems for around 8 months and I need some help. I have visited numerous doctors and not one of them has helped me.

Last May I was rushed to the E.R. due to unbearable abdominal pain. The punching/throbbing pain occurred in pinpointed spots all over my abdomen and was not based in nausea. That night I was diagnosed with pancreatitis due to elevated Lipase levels. Later with the help of a CT scan, we definitively determined that I did NOT have pancreatitis (which makes sense, as I am a 19 year old female).

The pain continued throughout the summer and was made worse by soy products (or so I thought), and to respond to this, I cut down my soy intake. The pain has now morphed.

In September the stomach pain came back with achy-ness and nausea, and I completely lost my appetite. I ended up losing 15 lbs (and I wasn't big to begin w/).

About a month ago I drank alcohol and got drunk for the first time in months. Very shortly after I had a couple of drinks, I was doubled over in pain that was alleviated by nothing. It felt like something was burning a hole through my stomach out to my back and up to my neck. I had horrible diarrhea for days and was in a lot of pain. The pain has not stopped and has lasted everyday for the last month. I also have constant heartburn that varies in severity. And sorry to get graphic, but the diarrhea has white strings on it. I had an inconclusive endoscopy and have been tested for parasites (it was negative).

I am only 19. I do not want whatever this is to plague me all my life. Please help me. Any ideas as to what this might be/what I should do??

If you want some serious advice... AVOID ALCOHOL!! With any problems with the pancreas, you DO NOT want to drink. It sounds like you had an acute attack of pancreatitis, that either did not resolve, or turned into chronic pancreatitis, and if that is the case, you should avoid alcohol at all costs. Pancreatitis is typically described as being from alcoholism, or excessive drinking, but there are lots and lots of other reasons you may have problems at your age. There is a thing called pancreas divisium that is a fairly common birth defect and causes bouts of pancreatitis. Be aware, every time you feel that pain, your pancreas is all swollen. You must avoid alcohol and follow a low fat diet. You should get tested for celiac disease and have your doctor follow your amylase and lipase blood levels closely. Also, get checked every three months for diabetes. You will find that the stringy diarrhea will subside with a low and I mean LOW fat diet. This means that if it contains over 2 grams of fat per serving, STAY AWAY! It is tricky, got a lot of label reading to do. Also, it isn't just fat that could cause you problems.. Raw vegis have a lot of fiber in them and sometimes it is hard to digest them. Try cooking them. Avoid butter, mayo, anything other than fat free milk.. You will find lots of substitutes out there... And don't be shy, continue to ask questions, and do lots of reading. Often times we with pancreatitis have to manage our doctors, because they normally don't know much about the pancreas. See if you can get into a gastroenterologist, they are supposed to know how to diagnose you. And just because your CT scan didnt' show anything, doesn't rule out pancreatitis. You could get an MRCP, CT, Xray, and all kinds of other tests.. they could all come up negative. They do a specialized procedure called an EUS on me to track the progress of my disease. They also have a procedure called an ERCP that you will want to avoid at all cost. There is much to learn on the subject. There are lots of resources out there for you to check out.. Try the Pancreatitis Place on yahoo groups, also try http://top5plus5.com/ and try the john hopkins pancreas site. There is lots of info and support out there to make your journey less scary and more livable. I am sorry you have this terrible problem... but know that you are not alone, there are lots of us out there.
