MODEL OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM!! DUE 11-22-10?ok so i'm in the sixth grade and we have to do a project about the digestive system that is part of our grade. we have to make a model of the system complete with labels, and index cards with information about the organs. the digestive system includes the oral cavity, salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, large intestine, and other organs that we haven't learned yet. a 3 is a 100% grade, but a 4 is that you went beyond what you learned in class(extra credit points awarded for 4s). i really want a 4, and my science teacher said we could earn a 4 by either adding information about the organs(either organs we havent learned or information we havent learn), or making the model work(and the food doesnt have to be completely digested). i am using salt dough to shape the organs, but i'm stuck on the making it work part. what food should i digest and what liquid could digest it?
the model has to be 90% recyclable, and we can't spend more than $ 10 on supplies.

okay ill help you add organs and give you material. BUT if you dont want to read everything i wrote or find it too complicated scroll down to the bottom!!!
the main organs and parts of the digestive system are the:
Salivary Glands helps chemical digestion (excretes an enzyme called salivary amylase that breaks down carbohydrates)
Teeth helps physical digestion. chewing breaks down food so it can easily pass through the esophagus.
Epiglottis prevents food from going into the trachea
Pharynx basically the throat (passage way)
Esophagus tube that allows food to pass from pharynx to stomach
Stomach where chemical and physical digestion occur. we have gastric juices that break down protein. (pepsin is an ezyme that breaks down protein which is activated by hydrochloric acid)
Liver contains bile which helps lipase (enzyme) break down fat
Pancreas contains many important enzyme (pancreatic amylase, trypsin and chymotrypsin, lipase) to break down protein, lipids (fats) and carbohydrates. all these enzymes are transported to the small intestine it also contains bicarbonate which neutralizes stomach acid .
Gallbladder stores bile
Duodenum (Start of Small Intestine) where pancreatic fluids are transported to
Small Intestine where most of the chemical digestion occurs (pancreatic fluids (enzymes) delivered here)
Large Intestine passing of food
Colon contains millions of bacteria called ecoli to break down food
Appendix not needed anymore but helped with fighting diseases.
Rectum holding area for feces (poo)
Anus where the feces (poo) leaves your body
If that was overwhelming and you dont want sooo much info! then i would either do this. say the PH (if you dont know what it is search it! it is very very simple!!!) in the body (mouth PH 7-8. stomach PH 2. small intestine PH 8) and/or simply add the rectum and anus because they are very important! and maybe the Epiglottis and Pharynx! (for info search up!) she would be very very impressed!!!! I hope this helps. sorry i cant help you on the model part (i am not a creative person :P) but i hope i helped you with the info!!
