Is it safe to eat the skin of a mango? When I eat mangos, I eat the skin. Most people don't like it but, believe it or not, that's my favorite part (as long as there's fruit attached . . lol).

Now, I understand that it can aggravate one's digestive system if too much is consumed. However, I have several friends who have told me to stop eating the skin because "it's poisonous".

I've looked online and various sources give me various answers.

Personally, since I've eaten it so often with no illness or harm, I don't believe that it's poisonous nor incredibly harmful in moderation. BUT, I want to know what all of you think about it. Am I fine or is my digestive system in for a bumpy ride in the future?

I don't eat the skin, but it should be ok if you like the flavor. The "poisonous" part come from the fact that some people are alergic to the sap of the Mango tree/skin - similar to poison ivey rash. I've never heard of it upsetting the digestive system. If it works for you, go for it!

I believe your nay-saying friends are thinking of PAPAYA, which does have toxins in the skin. Papaya skin (Papayin) is the active ingredient in Meat Tenderizer - and people's mouths are often very sensitive to it.
