I want to eat more vegan foods, but tofu gives me an upset stomach and digestive problems. Help?I want to be something like a cheating vegan; one that eats mostly vegan but cheats with some chicken or fish on rare occasions. I'm lactose intolerant and eggs and red meat upset my stomach very badly, so why not just be almost-vegan?

I would be completely vegan but sometimes I just can't avoid fish and chicken.... anyway!!

I don't really want to explain what happens in my digestive system, but I will say it's not pretty....
What can I do to keep my stomach from getting upset from tofu?
Gah, another thing I'm allergic to, food-wise. :P

I'll look into seitan and wheat gluten!

Any other suggestions?
I have 6 pet chickens in my yard and they keep themselves very clean, although their living quarters can get messy... so I see your point there.

I have never seen any problems with fish, but I can always just make sure to eat fish I catch myself if I can ever get out there....

As I said, a CHEATING vegan, not a vegan.
Thank you for all the advice guys... Thinking moreso, I will agree I'd feel guilty if I ate chicken or fish. I really love marine animals and I have chickens that I love very much... I don't think I like the idea of eating either anymore!!

You're probably also allergic to soy in large quantities. Try seitan, or wheat gluten, another popular ingredient for use as a meat substitute. You can find it at health food stores or asian markets. If there are none nearby you can order online.

Many grains, beans, nuts, etc. are a great source of protein. Any combination of a grain and a bean or nut will provide you with the same complete protein that soy and meat does.

A few other things to try: ice cream and yogurt made with coconut milk, daiya vegan cheese (soy free), amys soy/gluten/dairy free mac and cheese, almond milk

Then eat real food.

You can't be vegan if you eat meat...or vegatarian.
...you just can't...
I'm a vegan and I don't eat tofu at all! I hate it! You don't have to eat tofu... there are plenty of meat substitutes that do not include tofu, and any other nutrients that you get from eating meat can be found in beans, nuts, seeds, and peanut butter.
I'm not going to tell you what to do, but in my opinion, chicken and fish are the two worst meats to eat... chickens are pretty filthy (especially in the factories we have now) (in every package of chicken there is a little bit a poop :D ) and I've seen so many worms crawl out of raw fish I can't even look at them in an aquarium anymore...

Too much soy isn't good - try balancing your protein intake by mixing in quinoa or sprouts. They are extremely high in protein and easy to digest.

Also, kudos to you for raising pet chickens. That is so cool! Major karmic brownie points to you!.

Try tempeh. The soybeans are fermented, so they are a bit easier to digest. Large quantities of tofu can be hard on anyone's belly.

Someone else mentioned seitan and wheat gluten. Both are great options.

Are you a fan of other legumes? Most beans are good sources of protein.

BTW, there's really no such thing as a cheating vegetarian or vegan... that's kind of like saying a cheating monogamist. Calling yourself that could wind up subconsciously making you feel guilty, like you are lying or failing in an attempt to be veg. If you called yourself vegan and continued to eat meat, you'd also confuse others about what vegan means, which isn't really that great for people who are trying to get a vegan meal. (Have you ever had someone try to offer your pork when you said that you didn't eat red meat and been annoyed at the darned pork producers for ever starting that stupid campaign?) It's kind of an etiquette thing. There's nothing wrong with NOT being vegetarian or vegan, but if you aren't, it's best to not say that you are.

The term you are looking for is probably pescepollotarian. That's someone who eats fish and bird meat but not mammal meat. If you plan on eating the poultry and fish only occasionally, you could also call yourself flexitarian. A flexetarian is a person who eats a mostly vegetarian diet but doesn't actually want to be a vegetarian.
