How do I subdue the pain of constipation? I am a 27yo VERY healthy female...?who has never EVER had any kind of bowel problems. Last week I got some kind of horrible food poisoning, and ever since my digestive tract has been way off.
After a weekend of diarrhea, my stools finally started loosely taking shape, and then all of the sudden, 2 days ago, very dry and painful stool. I let it pass, thinking this was just my system struggling to re-regularize itself, but then yesterday I felt another difficult stool coming on.
Just the urge to go was so painful that I decided to hold it in and I took a stool-softening non-laxative yesterday. That did nothing to ameliorate the situation.
Today I took a laxative and began upping my consumption of water, but I'm still preventing myself from passing the stool.
Like I said, I've never dealt with these kind of issues... but I keep thinking that if I just wait it out 6 to 12 hours, the hardened stool that I know would be so painful to pass will turn softer with the laxative I took. Therefore, waiting it out will let me avoid the pain and straining and bleeding of a bulky, dry stool.
Logically, however, I know that this is my body's waste and it needs to be expelled, and that keeping it in is sort of poisoning me, BUT... I can't bear the excruciating pain of defecation with my stools the way they currently are.
Two questions: is it ok to wait it out until the water and laxatives kick in? And if not, what oh what can I do to make the experience less excruciatingly painful?

Use Glycerine Suppositories from Boots. One up the bum, stay by the toilet and hey presto all gone. No cramps and no hard stools.
Keep drinking lots of water as you need this for soft stools.

You could take a tablespoon of Mineral Oil every day. I put mine in my hot tea every morning...stir it up in the tea and drink it fast. Easier than trying to take a spoonful of oil. BUT it really works well and is not habit forming. It will just give you a nice soft stool.
Dr told me to do this when I needed surgery for hemorrhoids.
Not good to hold your bowels back.
