-Starts at the mouth, where the salivary glands are located. Saliva breaks down starch and chewing physically breaks down food.
-Food goes through the phanynx, down your esophagus and to your stomach.
-Stomach contains gastric glands which release gastric juices, which in turn breaks
down protein.
-Small Intestine breaks down and absorbs fat,carbohydrates and protein.
-Large Intestine absorbs water and other nutrients.
-Whats left goes through the rectum and the anus.
Food moves through the digestive system due to peristalsis, which are muscular contractions which move food down your digestive tract.

Wow brings back memories.
First of all the definition of digestion. Remember its always better to start with the definition of something than follow it with whatever. So the definition of digestion is a chemichal process that consists of the breaking down of larger molecules to smaller molecules.
1)The Mouth - the act of taking food into the mouth is called ingestion. In the mouth the food is chewed and mixed with saliva. The chewing breaks the food into smaller pieces so it can be easily digested.
2)Swallowing- For food to enter the gullet/oesophagus it has to pass over the trachea/windpipe.The food is forced into and down the oesophagus by peristalsis(wave of contraction).
3)The Stomach - The stomach has elastic walls which stretch as food collects in it. The main function of the stomach is to store food from a meal, turn it into a liquid and release it in small quanities at a time.
4)The Small Intestine - All digestable material is changed into soluble compounds which can pass through the lining of the intestine and enter the blood stream.
5) The Large Intestine - The material passing into the large intestine consists of water with undigested materials, like cellulose, roughages, mucus and dead cells. The semi solid waste, te faeces or stool, is passed into the rectum by peristalsis and is expelled throught the anus.

Well i hope i made this VERY clear. Of course theres alot more that happens in the small intestine, stomach and there are more organs involves though less significant, but this is just the main idea of it. And thats all you need to explain how to digestive system works. <3
