The sequential clenching of the smooth muscles move the food through the digestive system much like squeezing toothpaste out of a tube.

Peristalsis is an automatic and important process that moves food through the digestive system. It also moves bile from the gallbladder into the duodenum.

Peristalsis is very important in order to complete the process of digestion. Breaking down the materials from larger to smaller pieces require specific areas and it can only be attained with the expense of peristalsis. Food will be stocked if there is absence of peristalsis. It will only poison the body.
