Does anyone here have babies with digestive problems? That require gastro appointments with a specialist?

I think my baby could have a problem with her digestive system.. I dont think it's anything that serious but I think she could have either relux, allergy to milk, or just excessive gas.

These are her symptoms:

Sometimes she doesn't want to breastfeed. After about 5 minutes into breastfeeding, she archs her back and cries and gets fussy, so I have to stop nursing.

She also vomits sometimes.. maybe once every 2 or 3 days. The times when it happens is when I burp her, or when she coughs and then it triggers it.

She always has a lot of gas. During breastfeeding it seems like the milk is hurting her stomach or esophagus or something, because she won't stop squirming.. I have to pull her legs to her chest so she can let her gas out.

I'm just afraid she could have something terribly serious. She was diagnosed with a hole in her heart at 4 weeks so I'm constantly worrying and if she has something serious with her digestive system I am going to die seriously, with the heart problem is sufficient to stress me out. Thanks.
my baby is 11 weeks old and weighs 11 lbs, 14 ounces.
That's what comforts me, that she's gaining weight and pooing fine.
I have to agree I drink milk in a regular basis, and also eat a lot of mexican salsa.. I dont know if this could cause it.
Hers is vomiting. It has happened that it just dribbles out in a big amount, but sometimes it is projectile, but only like 3 inches... sometimes it dribbles out, and sometimes it is projectile.. Usually it is projectile when she is coughing before and it triggers it.

iVE Heard coughing is a symptom of reflux

that keeps happening to my baby too. I think its acid reflux. We are going to see the pediatrician tomorrow. My baby hasn't gained much weight either. She is only 12 lbs and is 5 months old. She was 8 lbs 11 oz to begin with. Good luck.

Sounds like her weight gain is great!

This sounds a lot to me like a cow's milk protein allergy. Cow's milk proteins are passed through breastmilk. If I were you, I'd try eliminating all dairy from my diet for 3 weeks. I mean ALL dairy - not just the obvious stuff, but even crackers, cookies, cereal etc. with any dairy in it (you will see whey or casein on the ingredient list.) You have to be really careful about anything you eat - but you should see an improvement within 3 weeks.

Whatever you do, don't wean! Your breastmilk is the best possible thing for your baby (as formulas are MADE of cow's milk, and many babies with a cows' milk allergy are also sensitive to soy.) Hang in there!

It could be reflux or a milk allergy. My son has both. I cut dairy products out of my diet when he was 9 weeks old and ever since then, he has been a different baby. I don't think there's any need for you to see a specialist. Your regular doctor should do just fine. Try cutting dairy out of your diet and see if the gas and spitting up gets better. You will need to be really careful because there are dairy products in tons of things. Even a lot of breads have milk. At the bottom of the ingredients, it will say contains milk ingredients in bold. If it helps, you found the problem. If it doesn't, ask your doctor about reflux medicines. Reflux doesn't cause gas though, that is likely something in your diet. If milk isn't the culprit, try cutting out citrus, including citric acid, and other gassy foods such as beans, garlic, and broccoli. If it turns out to be milk, feel free to email me. I have been breastfeeding and cutting out milk for 4 months and have a lot of good alternatives and recipes for dairy free food so you won't have to stop nursing!

You should certainly try cutting all the problematic foods out of your diet: caffeine, chocolate, dairy, excessively spicy foods, and gas producing foods (beans, broccoli etc). That may help somewhat. But it sounds as if her issues are severe enough to at least put a call into your pediatrician during business hours and repeat the symptoms and ask for advice. Not wanting to feed, arching back during feeding are all classic symptoms of reflux, but excessive gassiness is not necessarily related to reflux, so that makes me think indigestion (problems with the milk) moreso than reflux (which is a problem with the strength of the muscle that holds the esophagus separate from the stomach).

You also need to remember that vomiting is much different from spitting up, even if it happens in volume. Vomitting is the explosive expulsion of a large amount of the stomach contents. Often this is so violent it comes out a baby's nose and mouth, and may be projected two or more feet forward. A baby can spit up a fair amount of food, and it always looks like more than it really is. This is pretty common, especially when spit up comes up with a burp. Try burping her more regularly so she doesnt have food sitting on top of an airbubble.
