Digestive problems in a newborn? Confused...?My son is 5 weeks old now... when he was born, we had to change him to the lacto free formula because he was having probs with spitting up and gagging. Lately, we've been having bad luck. He's experiencing tummy aches, hardening of the stomach, 3-4 hour stretches where he doesn't sleep, he's irritable, vomits a large amount after a feeding about once a day, he has pretty frequent spitting up, frequent hiccups, and he's developed escema (i know thats not spelled right). He's constantly searching for a bottle like he's hungry... we upped him from 3oz to 4oz., but it still doesn't help. He's really hard to burp... It'll take like 10 minutes to get one little burp. Am I missing something? Am I not burping him enough? Or feeding him enough? Or could it be something to do with maybe changing his formula? SHould I change it back? He's not having any constipation or diahrea (that's not spelled right either i know). Is this common? What should I do?

You need to talk to the Dr. Sounds like acid reflux problems to me but I'm not a Dr.

Sounds like he's collicky too (irritable, hard belly). I don't know if there is anything else going on. I'm not a doctor, but it seems to me that your pediatrician should be working very closely with you on this concern. If you feel you are getting the brush-off, find a new pediatrician!

You may want to check with his doctor. My nephew was 3 weeks old and having a lot of the same symptoms. The doctor at a local children's hospital checked his stomach and sometimes the stomach flap doesn't let the food leave the stomach like it needs to. I would definitely check this out. It is very common in first born boys.

You should take him back to the ped. They will probably want to do a barium x ray to make sure he doesn't have pyloric stenosis or malrotation of the intestines. Both of these disorders are life-threatening if not corrected but once corrected do not pose a problem. It is also possible he does have acid reflux and there is a medication they can prescribe for that. Do not mess around with this though.

This happened to my son, and he ended up having acid reflux. My pediatrician put my son on reflux medicine and also told me to put rice cereal in his bottles. It worked great.
