Difference between Monogastric and Ruminant digestive systems?I'm trying to complete an assignment, but i'm having trouble with this question.
"Outline the anatomical differences between the Monogastric and Ruminant digestive systems, briefly explaining how they work.
I understand that the Monogastric digestive system contains only 1 stomach, and the Ruminant digestive system contains 4 stomachs.
Is that the only anatomical difference?
Any suggestions on how i could elaborate on this more?
Any help would be great ^_^

you can talk about the different pH levels in each stomach. If i remember correctly each stomach has its own function and digest certain things. you should look that up as well

It would be more correct to say ruminant digestive system has 4 divisions as opposed to 4 stomachs.
Here are some more differences:
In monogastric animals, the stomach's functions are limited to temporary storage and preliminary mastication of the food into a liquid mass; little or no absorption of nutrients takes place.
In ruminants, however, the stomach has an absorption function in addition to the usual functions of mastication and acidification.
Ruminants have symbiotic microorganisms that produce cellulase enzymes, something no mammal can do on its own. The cellulase breaks down the cell walls of plant materials to release fatty acids into the gut.
