Dialysis and digestive problems???My father-in-law's kidneys failed in mid-January. He has been diabetic for 7 years. He underwent immediate surgery to have a catheter put in his chest so that dialysis could being immediately. He had surgery on Tuesday afternoon and had his first dialysis treatment on Wednesday at 4pm! He has had approximately 10 dialysis treatments thus far and seems to be doing well with them.
However, he has a very bad and disheartening side effect--every single time he eats ANYTHING, he gets diarrhea and throws up. His doctor told him to drink Citrucel and he has been doing this for a week with no relief yet. My family would like to know if this has happened to anyone else and what was done to resolve the problem. We are new at this whole dialysis thing, so any help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU in advance to anyone who can offer us some advice! :)

hmmm that's not good. A useful source of dialysis information is the Yahoo group Dialysis_Support here http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/dialysis_support/
You'll find over 1,000 members and an archive of over 50,000 messages. I suggest the group because I can't think of a simple answer for you so you may have to try different strategies but don't give up.
Your FIL needs to eat enough calories and enough protein. There are renal supplements - fluids with all the nutrition you FIL needs to get into himself (ask the renal nutritionist every dialysis unit is required to have available to provide for suggestions). Also the nausea and diarrhea could be coincidental to dialysis and should be looked at as possible symptoms of something else by his doctor.
My last thought is that your FIL may not be getting enough dialysis and the nausea and diarrhea could be sign of uremia. Increasing the length of treatments may solve the problem. Your FIL could ask for an extra treatment e.g. instead of having two days off he could dialyze two days in a row.

even the same thing happened to one of my friend here sorry to say but he is in his last stage ........ya the only relif would be fruit juice (no personal comments)
