Could something be wrong with my GI tract? 1-2 bowel movements a week? For the past 6 or so years, I haven't been able to have more than 2 bowel movements a week. I never really worried about it because it didn't bother me. I have A LOT of fiber in my diet and I also tried fiber supplements. Laxatives and stool softners just tear my stomach apart. I went to my doctor a few years ago and they just gave me some Miralax (which used to be only available with a prescription) - didn't work, so I just stopped caring. Now I'm kinda worried that I may be messing up my GI tract. As mentioned, it doesn't bother me, but I still worry. My doctor told me not to worry about it and just to increase my fiber, but damnit I don't think thats gonna do it. Any ideas on what could cause this problem? I don't have insurance at the moment to get it checked out so thats probably why my doctor says to forget it.
Well maybe it is normal - I just figured it wasn't because my husband goes 3-4 times a day and my parents always told me that they went at least twice a day and if they didn't that they felt constipated

I don't think that's abnormal. I have days in which I don't have to go and I'm fine. If it's not bothering you then I would not worry.

For some people, bowel movements occur daily (sometimes several times daily) and for others once or twice a week is normal. If you are otherwise healthy, don't keep forcing those laxatives or fiber because you can develop a dependency on them by using them too often.Your doctor is right - don't worry about this. Worry and stress can really mess with your body, especially your stomach and bowels. Normal for you is normal FOR YOU. If your physician thought you needed to be checked out he/she would have referred you for care regardless of whether you have insurance. Good doctors don't think about your insurance issues as a deciding factor. There are ways to get help if you need it. Be glad your doctor is not ordering a bunch of unnecessary tests and is honest with you. Enjoy your good health! If you develop unexplained weight loss (> 10 pounds without dieting) worsening constipation, bowel changes (in your case chronic diarrhea) or abdominal pain, then see a GI specialist.
