Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. The systolic is defined as the peak pressure in the arteries, which occurs near the beginning of the cardiac cycle; the diastolic arterial pressure is the lowest pressure (at the resting phase of the cardiac cycle).
The heartbeat rate is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which is composed of two parts -- the sympathetic system speeds up the heartbeat rate while the parasympathetic system slows it down. Many factors, such as temperature, oxygen supply, or nervous excitement, affect heartbeat.
Some disorders of the circulatory system include:
1) Hypertension (high blood pressure)
2) Hypotension (low blood pressure)
3) Arteriosclerosis (the thickening, hardening, and loss of elasticity of the walls of the blood vessels)
4) Thrombosis (the formation of a clot inside a blood vessel)
