Can a person with a disability/chronic illness become a doctor?I'm in year 12 now and have always wanted to be a doctor. I have a chronic digestive disease and a bleeding disorder. I am in constant pain and can be very ill. I become tired (and sometimes weak) easily and there have been times when I have had to use a wheelchair. I know I sound like a nightmare doctor but it has been a passion of mine all of my life. I do well at school and I am wondering if it would be possible for me to succeed in a medical degree and career. Obviously I'm not going to be a surgeon or work in emergency medicine but could I become a doctor?

It is still possible of course. But if your illness will hinder you as a doctor and stop you from doing your job to the best of your ability and to the standards expected. Then it will be difficult because you will be putting patients at risk. As long as you can cope with the work (as it can be very stressful with a lot of pressure) and manage your illness simultaneously then it is possible.

However, I advise that you seek advice from a doctor as they will know more about your condition and whether or not it will affect you as a doctor.
I also suggest that you apply for a work experience placement in a hospital in order to experience what life is like as a doctor and whether you will be able to cope.
