The stomach produces an acidic chyme, which helps to break down food. The acid must be neutralized before it enters the remainder of the digestive system, so the nearby pancreas produces alkaline enzymes to neutralize the chyme. The production of alkaline enzyme by the pancreas is controlled by hormones produced by the stomach (gastrin, secretin) during digestion.
