acid in the stomach is HCL. It is released by the pareital cells in the stomach. I spelled that wrong u gotta look up these cells. The hydro cloric acid functions to kill some bacteria in food and to denature proteins. Protein is made up of a long chain of amino acids. It is curled up in like a ball in structure. When the protein is denatured, this protein ball straightens up in a line. This allows enzymes to break bonds (break up the proteins).

The HCl in the stomach is produced to lower the pH; pepsin (the protease produced by the stomach) will not digest proteins properly unless the pH is around 1.5-2.
