There is liver disease and also gastrointestional disease.

The liver is located under the rib cage on the right front of the body. If the doctor does a physical examination of this area,
he can feel if the liver has enlarged.
Usually, when there is inflammation inside
the liver, this causes this enlargement.
This inflammation can be treated and it can go away if someone stops doing something
that causes it...like drinking alcohol, using
drugs that are toxic to the liver or stresses
the liver, avoiding chemical contact, losing
weight if they have been diagnosed with
a fatty liver. However, there are some
inflammation of the cells that can be treated but there are no quarantees of complete healing: like hereditary problems.
Yet, there is another catagory of inflammation of the liver that can be caused
by bile duct obstruction by a stone or an
autoimmune disease where the bile ducts
become strictures or twisted or contacting
a viral or bacterial hepatitis.
....
If the inflammation is not treated, it can
lead to the death of the liver cells which is
known as cirrhosis. This has no cure and
is a progressive disease.

The liver is a very silent organ until the cells
start to die off. When this happens, the
functions that the liver once handled to keep
the body healthy, go down and then symptoms will appear. The patient may
feel tired, run a fever, feel nauseated.
But them will start to appear like they have
yellow skin and whites of the eyes...this
is usually the very first sign the liver isn't
functioning well.
....
When you said gastrointestinal Disease...
you may be referring to the rare diseases
known as Crohns, or Ulcerative colititis.
This also can cause fever and nausea,
cramping and diarrhea.

I am posting this site where you can look
at the different things that may occur
and read about all this as I cannot really
tell what disease you mean:

Usually, if someone has liver trouble they
do testing like an ultrasound, Ct scan, or
MRI...these are not painful and are nothing
more than just taking a picture. However,
a liver biopsy or if you have an ERCP
you can ask for sedation and it will be
easy on you.
...
If you have an intestinal problem, you
may have an colonoscopy...you can also
be sedated for that. On the site I posted
here it will tell you about some of the
procedures they do.

I hope this is of some help to you.
