What can I do about my male cat that continuously has urinary disorders?Hi all, I have a 2 year old male tabby (Oliver) whom I found at the shelter in December. Since he has made his way into our home and our hearts his health conditions have been less than desireable.
In early June Oliver blocked and was hospitalized for his condition. They gave him a catheter and ran an IV to hydrate him for 48 hrs. When he returned home we gave him medication for nearly 2 weeks to clear the urinary symptoms and the respiratory infection he contracted at the vet :( Now, a month later he is showing signs of infection / discomfort. I have taken him to the vet 3 times since his blockage and every time we go they assure me that he is doing okay but that he must continue to take his urethral dialator and pain medications.
This whole situation is very stressful and expensive! I want to be able to provide my cat with the PU surgery so that I never have to see him so miserable again. Problem being, I am NOT made of money. I started the c/d diet yesterday and although very picky he seems to be enjoying the food. Will this work? Or is my only solution surgery? I love my sweet boy immensly and only want what's best. Any good advice please.

I had this problem with my cat as well. Sorry I know how this might be hard on you. Some of the things we did is we bough him a water fountain to encourage him to drink as well as placed bowls of water in other rooms (he prefers the bedroom the most). I also have some cranberry powder I put into his wet food every other day (this is actually how you treat bladder/kidney infections for people). Also if you are afraid and don't want to be running to the vet every day there is special cat litter that detects urinary tract infections (although this can get expensive. Your vet should have some special food to help, wet food is better. My cat hasn't had any episodes since...

I think the c/d will work. I've had two males with UTIs now. One had a couple of reoccuring infections. The vet told me that I'd see a big difference after putting him on the food. He was right - and he never had another one. My current boy had one at 11 mos. He's been on the food since and he's 2.5 yrs. He hasn't had a reoccurance. Try the food. It will probably work. I've not heard of anyone yet that it didn't work.
