What are probiotics and can they help with digestive problems?I have digestive problems caused from being on antibiotics a long time ago and have tried exercise, eating fiber, drinking tons of water, and taking pills that help make you go, and none of it worked.

I heard that I should take probiotics. But I don't know anything about them. What are they, where can I get them, do they have negative side affects, can they also help clear skin too?

Pro-biotics are bacteria that help maintain the natural balance of organisms (microflora) in the intestines. Since (Pro-biotic) bacteria are already part of the normal digestive system, they are considered safe.
The results of some early studies suggest that probiotics found in yogurt may help prevent diarrhea caused by antibiotics. But more studies are needed to confirm that yogurt is effective. To offer benefit, the yogurt must contain active cultures. Most yogurt containers indicate whether active cultures are present. n most circumstances, people use probiotics to prevent diarrhea caused by antibiotics.
Antibiotics kill "good" (beneficial) bacteria along with the bacteria that cause illness. A decrease in beneficial bacteria may lead to diarrhea. Taking pro biotic supplements (as capsules, powder, or liquid extract) may help replace the lost beneficial bacteria and thus help prevent diarrhea. Your family physician should be consulted regarding the usage of over the counter supplemental therapies.

I take a probiotic every day for exactly the same reason. It's called G.I. Pro by Mannatech. If you can't find it on the internet, e-mail me and I'll give you a name to call.

My doctor explained that sometimes antibiotics go in and kill off bacteria (biotics) in your digestive tract. Then, the other bacteria, which are not subject to antibiotics, take over. A probiotic is then needed to stabilize the bacteria.

I haven't noticed ANY side effects, except perhaps more regularity and less rumbling. I hadn't heard about clear skin, so idk.

Have you tried miralax? It's a miracle for people like us.

Activa yogurt works, too, just really slowly.

Beneficial bacteria are absolutely necessary for your GI track to work properly. And probiotics will help replenish what you may have lost by taking antibiotics.

I had a similar problem a few years back because of years of antibiotic use. It wasn't a quick process to get the GI track back to normal and it required cutting down on sugars and white carbs (wheat, potatoes and white rice).

Jarrow makes a good probiotic with a pretty complete range. I use the yellow label. You will find all probiotic in the refrigerator section of a good health food store.

Some yogurts on the market although they say that they contain active cultures don't have enough to build your system back up enough. There are also a lot of sugars in them.

Some foods that will help feed the good bacteria as it starts to rebuild: Kefir (kind of like a yogurt), sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar. Some cheeses that are aged like parmesian, blue cheddar. they've got natural cultures and enzymes. I wouldn't go overboard on them though.
