Suggestions for dog with chronic digestive problems (diarrhea)? She has only eaten high-quality food. I started her with Canidae, then I switched to California Natural since that has fewer ingredients and is therefore supposed to be easier on dogs' stomachs, but the problem didn't go away. Then I stopped giving her treats (so that the California Natural was the ONLY thing she was eating), but that didn't help. I've had a few different vets check her out, and she is otherwise completely healthy. (No parasites or anything like that.) Her current vet wants to put her on Eukanaba Low Residue or Hill's Prescription Diet i/d, but I don't consider either of those to be good quality food. And I'm not prepared to try raw food diets or anything extreme like that. The next step would be expensive tests (bloodwork, x-rays, etc.). Does anybody have any other suggestions? Help!

Try giving her a cup of cooked white rice with every meal it could help harden her poop.Canidae is an awsome food, but switching food a lot can lead to diarrhea.Try sticking to the canidae with a cup of cooked rice (more if shes a bigger dog)for 2 weeks,if shes still having problems you might have to do the exspencive tests

my husky is food sensitive. i have been giving him lamb and rice dry and wet and he has had the runs off and on for the last couple of weeks. i give him pepto bismal 1 tsp per 20 lbs or kaopectade 1 tsp per 10 lbs every 5 to 6 hours and it calms the bowels and stomach down. you can make your own by boiling up hamb.skinless chicken and rice and feed in small portions every few hours for a couple of days and see if it firms her up. if it does introduce her back to her regular food slowly. it she get the diarrhea again its the store bought food that she is sensitive too so make it or try other kinds. good luck.

It could be colitis (sp.)
Try asking the vet to check to see if it's that or irritable bowel disease...yes they can get it too
Is there an urgency to poop and sometimes vomiting? Does you dog gain weight or not?
it is different when small intestine or large so it could be one or the other...definitely ask the vet about it...

Unfortunately, inless you want to just spend a lot of money on getting tests done, you really should try cooking. It's not that hard, and there's simple ingredients. It's not costly if you cook in bulk, as well. I use 1/4 cup cooked veggies, 1 lb. hamburger meat, 1/2 cup brown rice.

You might have switched foods too fast as well. Sometimes it can take months just for the dog to get used to the food. Adding a little bit of pure pumpkin (from the can an non-spiced) can add proper fiber to the food.

I would definately try the cooking diet FIRST and then if that doesn't work, you can talk to the vet for further testing.

I personally can recommend the Hills I/D. My dog had trouble for a couple years with his tummy....diarrhea, vomiting, etc. I kept trying different foods and we found out that he was allergic to some of the dyes that are in some foods. My vet suggested the Hills and I tried it. I had been through so many foods and I was skeptical but it really worked! He lived to be 16 and then died of cancer. I feel like it added years of, not only life, but quality life. He was very prone to pancreatitis and other digestive problems. I didn't have any more problems after switching. It might not work for you but I wouldn't give up. Sometimes you have to find what works with your paticular dog. My dog that I have now does better on the Purina Vet Diet EN. It is expensive compared to other dog foods but he does well on it so it is worth it. Hope you find what works soon! Good luck.
