Oregon SB 777 - Proposed Changes Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP)






Wednesday, March 16, 2011 Modifies list of debilitating medical conditions for which medical marijuana is available and removes power of Oregon Health Authority to add other debilitating medical conditions to list. Requires registry identification cardholder to provide updated documentation from physician about debilitating medical condition to authority every six months. (March 14, Portland, Oregon) A radical and expensive bill that will remove most cancer patients from Oregon's medical marijuana program will be discussed at a hearing of the Senate Healthcare Committee on Wednesday, March 16, at 3 pm Senate Bill 777 would eliminate cancer as a qualifying condition for the program. Marijuana advocacy groups plan to pack the Senate hearing room with patients and advocates in protest of this punitive bill. The only cancer patients who would be eligible would be those suffering the immediate effects of nausea due to chemotherapy. Cancer patients who use marijuana for nausea due to other complications of their disease or treatment, or for pain or depression, would be guilty of a criminal offense, punishable by a fine or imprisonment. Most cancer patients at any given time are not receiving chemotherapy. The bill would also eliminate severe nausea as a qualifying condition, unless it is a result of chemotherapy.
