Is there any connection between stomach disorders and autism?

Individuals on the autism spectrum may have trouble digesting proteins such as gluten. Research in the U.S. and England has found elevated levels of certain peptides in the urine of children with ASD, suggesting the incomplete breakdown of peptides from foods that contain gluten and casein. Gluten is found in wheat, oats and rye, and casein in dairy products. The incomplete breakdown and the excessive absorption of peptides may cause disruption in biochemical and neuroregulatory processes in the brain, affecting brain functions. Until there is more information as to why these proteins are not broken down, the removal of the proteins from the diet is the only way to prevent further neurological and gastrointestinal damage.

Some hypothesize that children with ASD have what is referred to as a "leaky gut" -- tiny holes in their intestinal tract that may be caused by an overgrowth of yeast. Some believe that this overgrowth may contribute to behavioral and medical problems in individuals on the spectrum, such as confusion, hyperactivity, stomach problems, and fatigue. The use of nutritional supplements, anti-fungal drugs and/or a yeast-free diet may reduce the behavioral problems.

Secretin is a hormone produced by the small intestine that helps in digestion. The hormone can be administered and used as a single dose to diagnose gastrointestinal problems. Parents and professionals who tried secretin on children with autism reported improvements in sleep patterns, eye contact, language skills, and alertness.

Autistic children have psychological problems involving elimination. That sure would lead to stomach problems.

Also, there is a condition called "VATER" that is a congenital defect of the ailementary canal. Babies born with that are predisposed to autism.

Yes, there is a connection. My son is being treated for yeast infection of the intestines. I started the gluten/casein free diet 2 months ago at the same time. He has trouble digesting gluten and if he gets exposed to it, his ears start to turn red, and acts like a drunk. My son started to shake his head side to side, jumping up and down, and kicking the table. He could not sit still. He is semi-verbal due to apraxia but the effect is clear. He has many food intolerances. We found mercury and lead in his body. As a baby, he had constant colic, constipation, and severe abdominal pain. This has disappeared with changes in his diet and adding aloe vera juice. When the yeast is finally killed, we hope to finally heal his intestines and maybe get rid of the drug like effect from foods.

HELLO. I am new to this site, and I don't know the science of it all. I attended one seminar about brain disorders and the close connection between digestive function and the part of the brain that, when it is damaged, causes developmental/mental disorders. Also, I have an autistic son with several food sensitivities, causing severe diarrhea. One of his sensitivities is milk. I also have an older son with Asperger's (undiagnosed - but very probably) who has ulcerative colitis that we picked up on by about the 1st grade.
Both kids have ADHD and other problems. We try to treat them both with medication and dietary changes. Just an example!

"Yeast" is one of the many ingrediants in some vaccines. That's very interesting.
