The small intestines are in-fact longer than the large intestines

intestines are lined with villi which increase the surface area for neutirants to be absorbed into the body

Digestive system or alimentary canal begins with the oesophagus which is a 9" long muscular tube connecting to the stomach.
Food is pushed along by a series of contractions - peristalsis
Food stays in the stomach for approx 4 hours for the digestive processes to take place in the presence, mostly of hydrocholoric acid.
The bacteria helicobacter pylorii is able to live in the acid environment and contributes towards stomach ulcers (massive doses of antibiotics used to kill h.pylorii)
From the stomach, food passes into the duodenum, same area as the liver (plus gall bladder) and pancreas situated.
From there to the small intestine (approx 22' in length) where movements of the villi keep things moving, to the caecum (blind gut) plus 4" long appendix, thence to the ascending colon, transverse and descending colon; water is removed during the travels through the colon. Finally, the waste material travels through the rectum and anus.
