How severe does one's depression have to be to get Social Security?I have major depressive disorder and severe anxiety. I am currently employed but have missed a week of work just recently due to my condition. I'm currently medicated on Zoloft and Vistaril. The meds have me so out of it that its hard to function and I still suffer from symptoms. Would I qualify for Social Security?
I also have severe muscle spasms and GI tract issues that are undiagnosed and untreated.

most people get turned down when they first apply, then you can get a lawyer, and the lawyer will fight for it. you have to pay about $ 6000 of your back pay of SSI to the lawyer though if you win. it took my lawyer 1 1/2 years to get a trial to determine that i WAS disabled and entitled to money.
how long have you had the anxiety/depression? have you been seeing a psychiatrist, or regular doctor? have you been to a mental institution? there are a bunch of things that will help you get it. but if you just started taking meds like 3 months ago, and you only visit your family doctor, the SSI/disability people will laugh in your face!

I believe you have to be off work for 6 to 10 months, not sure how long, but it has to be severe enough that you can't work, and it affects your day to day living. I would suggest try a different medication one that don't have you so out of it. Good luck, God Bless
