the process of digestion starts with mouth(chewing).it breaks up the large pieces into small piseces, chewing is controlled by skeletal muscles of the mouth and jaw.saliva secretes an enzyme called PTYALIN or SALIVARY AMYLASE and it acts on starch and converts into maltose(disaccharide).the chewed is formed into bolus(round in shape).the food enters into oesophagus(food pipe) & it takes 9 sec. to reach the stomach.the food slowly passes through the foodpipe due to PERISTALTIC WAVES. when the food reaches the stomach, the 2 enzymes of the stomach,PEPSIN & RENIN.the stomach is lined with gastric glands which secretes HCL, pepsin acts on proteins to give polypeptides & peptones.renin acts only soluble milk proteins & converts them into caesin(clcium ions).then the food reaches the small intestine, which is divided into 3 segments namely duodenum, jejunum,&ileum.the food in the small intestine mixes with 3 juices namely BILE JUICE,PANCREATIC &INTESTINAL JUICE.in all these juices there r various types of enzyme which acts on food & converts them into small particles & also provides us energy. at last food is absorbed by VILLI, the lymph duct of villi absorbs fattty acids & other materisls r absosbed by capillaries of villi.then, the conversion of food into energy &cellular organisation is called as ASSIMILATION.
