How common is it for dogs to be allergic to beef?Velvet, my english cocker spaniel, is allergic to beef. to a point where it completely messes with her digestive system and body. therefore she cannot eat dog food, and we cook chicken for her. she is now 11 years old, and we have been doing this since she was a pup.
i am just curious, how common is it for a dog to be allergic to beef? we have a friend with a dog also allergic to beef, and she has a friend with a dog with the same problem.
and, why are some dogs allergic to it? it is just a genetic thing? like a human allergy?
curious :) and i have not been able to find a decent answer on the internet

Actually, talk to any vet, and they'll tell you that most food allergies are not true "allergies", merely a sensitivity. Of course, it matters not, as the outcome is the same.

That being said, beef is also one of the hardest foods to digest for dogs. Lamb is actually the easiest. Have you tried using a lamb & rice dog food? Very few dog foods actually use beef, because it is so difficult for the dogs to digest.

ADD: A Food allergy manifests as itching and skin issues- an "intolerance" is characterised by diarrhea, etc.

Beef is hot on the canine allergy list because of over-exposure. With so many products containing beef, the combination of over-exposure to that protein PLUS our artificially stimulating the immune system through vaccination is a recipe for triggering allergies.

We are not seeing the same thing with chicken. Because so many dogs are allergic to beef, manufacturers have switched to chicken. Needless to say, once again we are seeing over-exposure to the chicken protein and when you combine that with vaccines (artificially stimulating the immune system) we're seeing more and more dogs come up with chicken allergies.

The solution is to vary the diet (ie: feed a wide variety of proteins) and not vaccinate any more than you have to. In over 90% of cases, booster shots are completely unnecessary.

Good luck!

It is fairly common for a dog to be allergic to beef. However, there are a number of great dog foods on the market with no beef nowadays, so it is not a big constraint. Other common allergens for dogs are grains (especially corn and wheat), soy, and milk products.

it's actually quite common. i had a pitbull that was allergic to beef. I switched him to chicken and rice dog food. He got the worst hives! But I stopped feeding him anything with beef and the hives cleared up =) Some are allergic and some are...just the way things are...just like with humans and allergies.
