Greenies Dog Treats: Intestinal / Digestive Problems.?My 10 yr old wheaten terrier has a problem with gulping (not chewing food completely). About a yr ago, she underwent exploratory surgery after a raw hide treat caused bloody stools and vomit. Since then, I've been very conservative about the treats she gets. I've given her medium Greenies in the past, but they seemed to give her very minor digestive problems so I stopped. Today my ex-girlfriend took my dog for the day, and when they got back, gave her a LG Greene. The LG Greenie is for dogs 50-100 lbs, my dog is 45 lbs. I should've taken it away, but figured I'd let her eat half and save the rest for later. A minute later I looked down and the whole thing was gone. After some research, I've become very concerned about the intestinal blockage possibilities posed by Greenies. Would taking her in for a Xray be premature if she hasn't yet shown signs of digestive problems? I want to be proactive, even if it's overly cautious (within reason). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

any type of chewie can cause digestive blockage not just greenies. Any time your dog is chewing on something you should be monitoring him. since she has undergone a blockage in the past I would definitely keep a close eye on her for any changes in behavior. Not sure if an x-ray now would do any good since it could still be in her stomach and you would not know if it passing through or not until it gets to the lower intestines.

By all means do take her to have her checked out if you can afford to. I do not buy commercially made dog treats, I make my own and i know what is in them. My dogs do not like the greenies, and the one that did, it made him sick. So I make my own.

I would definatly take to vet. I also tried these on my dogs and it made them all sick . They did not digest very well at all. I thought they would be better for them. No way.

The problems generally don't occur when they have a larger greenie, but when they gulp smaller ones. Are you sure she didn't just hide it somewhere? Watch her closely for any changes...like lethargy, vomiting, reluctance to eat, straining to pass a stool, etc. I personally don't think greenies are a great idea, period, due to all of the recent reports on intestinal blockages and pieces getting caught in the esophogus. Plus, being 10 years old, she could break off a tooth. In the future, try giving her large carrot stumps to chew (healthy for her gums and safe for her). Hope she's okay and that you don't see any indications that she has a blockage from this one incident.

take your dog into the vet because there might be a blockage which could kill her, and to see if there might be a digestion problem or intestinal problem.
