GI tract bleeding?

GI tract bleeding?I have a 4 months old shih tzu and for about a week he has been having black stool. No blood, just very black.
Today I called the vet and made an appt for tomorrow morning. The vet said that it is probably due to the upper digestive tract bleeding...might caused by a parasite.
I'm going to the vet tomorrow so I'll know the answer tomorrow but i just wanted to ask if anyone had this problem with their dogs and was it serious? What was the treatment? I love my puppy so much and just thinking about him bleeding inside brought tears to my eyes.
I just want to know that if he gets treated...will he be ok?
Thanks for the answers in advance

By the way, he hasn't lost his appetite and he hasn't been acting weird.
He was dewormed and got ALL the vaccinations and is getting flea treatment...
I was so careful so he won't get sick but I can't help but feeling so guilty.

Thanks for all of your answers...I feel a bit relieved.

It probably is from a parasite, but with treatment the dog should be fine. Usually the vet will put the dog on a dewormer and possibly a medication to help coat the lining of the gi tract.

It is akin to an ulcer. However, this does sound like it is something to be concerned about and taking your puppy to the vet is the best thing. I would not get frantic at this point. If it is cause by parasites, something common, then it is easily treated and can be prevented even. The fact he still has an appetite is good. So, don't worry but listen to your vet.

try not to worry. if it were life threatening the vet would have had you come in immediately. he will be OK.
