eating disorders and urinary tract infections?i'm working on recovering from an eating disorder but my weight is still pretty low...i just recently got a urinary tract infection and i looked it up online and it said it could be because of my eating disorder--what is the reason for that??

Because of your malnutrition, you lacked the necessary amount of vitamins needed to fight off infections. Now as you get back on your feet and on a much better, healthier diet, you will notice that you don't get as sick as you used to before.

Hope that helped and stay healthy! :)

probably because you become dehydrated when depriving yourself of nutrients. if you are dehydrated you do not produce as much urine as normal to flush your urinary tract of toxins, hence developing a UTI

That's interesting... I never thought of eating habits having anything to do with UTI's, since UTI's are normally caused by bacteria getting up inside you. If ever I get a UTI it is sometimes from sexual activity, sometimes from sitting in the bath too long, and sometimes from resisting the urge to pee too long. (Maybe since you're body might be dehydrated it doesn't flush your bladder of ickies like it is supposed to?) I found these pointers on a website:

# The female urethra is shorter and this makes it easier for bacteria to travel

# If the bladder is not completely emptied, it may lead to infection.

# Pregnant women and diabetic women are more likely to develop UTI (this is interesting, as it doesn't imply that pregnant women and diabetic women get bacteria from the outside any different from other women, so maybe something having to do with imbalanced nutrition making it hard to fight off infection?)

# Stones or tumor in the urinary tract can cause urinary tract

# Urinary catheters and nephrostomy tubes are also likely causes of UTI in women

I Googled it and I didn't find anything linking UTI's to eating disorders... not sure what to tell you.

Well, there could be any number of reasons, one being that if you are not eating properly, your immune system suffers, and your body can't properly defend itself against foreign cells (Bacteria, viruses, etc.). Another being that if you are anorexic/bulemic and puking frequently your stomach is producing an excess of acid, which since you don't have any food in your system to absorb the acids, the body passes those acids into your digestive system, which of course includes the urinary tract, and it throws off the body's natural Ph level. (PH is the scale which measures relative acidity.) When your PH level is off, especially in the bladder, it can cause all sorts of problems.*
