Barium ions are poisonous. Patients with digestive tract problems are sometimes given an X-ray after they have?Barium ions are poisonous. Patients with digestive tract problems are sometimes given
an X-ray after they have swallowed a 'barium meal', consisting of a suspension of
BaSO4 in water. The [Ba2+(aq)] in a saturated solution of BaSO4 is too low to cause
problems of toxicity.
(i) Write an expression for the solubility product, Ksp, for BaSO4, including its units.

(ii) The numerical value of Ksp is 1.30 × 10–10. Calculate [Ba2+(aq)] in a saturated
solution of BaSO4.

BaSO4(s) ⇄ Ba^2+(aq) + [SO4]^2-(aq)
x → x x
Ksp = [Ba^2+][[SO4]^2-] = 1.30 × 10^-10 mol^2 L^-2 (mol per liter squared). [BaSO4(s)] is assumed const (solid) and is taken into the Keq to give Ksp. Let conc of BaSO4 at equilibrium be x .: (eqn) [Ba^2+] = [[SO4]^2-] = x; putting into Ksp
Ksp = [x][[x] = x^2 = 1.30 × 10^-10
x = √(1.30 × 10^-10) = 1.14 × 10^-5 mol L^-1
You can convert this to g L^-1 (or per 100 g H2O) I hope.
